APSCo responds to ONS labour market figures - July 2023

For immediate release

Responding to the latest ONS labour market figures, Tania Bowers, public policy director at the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) said:

"It’s encouraging to see both an increase in employment and a decrease in economic inactivity, suggesting that the UK economy is just managing to keep its head above water.

"However, the rise in employment was largely driven by part-time employees, likely due to a reluctance by firms to commit to full-time hires given uncertainties around inflation and economic growth.

"The government must seek to create an environment that allows a strong and dynamic labour market which will help to ensure long-term prosperity. Policymakers need to make it easier for firms to hire staff, be it through changes to tax and regulation or better access to highly skilled talent from overseas."
